Overview

Serine beta-lactamases of class C, also known as cephalosporinases, are enzymes produced by various bacteria that confer resistance to β-lactam antibiotics, particularly cephalosporins. These enzymes hydrolyze the β-lactam ring of antibiotics, rendering them ineffective. They primarily hydrolyze cephalosporins but can act on other β-lactams. Common producers include Enterobacter cloacae (AmpC), Citrobacter freundii, Acinetobacter baumannii, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Salmonella enteritidis. These enzymes contribute significantly to antibiotic resistance in hospital-acquired infections.
