Serine beta-lactamase (class D)

Molecular classification
Enzyme, Hydrolase
01

Overview

Serine beta-lactamases (class D) are enzymes produced by bacteria that confer resistance to β-lactam antibiotics—including penicillins, cephalosporins, and carbapenems—by hydrolyzing the β-lactam ring of these drugs. They are a major clinical concern due to their ability to inactivate a broad spectrum of antibiotics. They belong to the serine-dependent group, using an active site serine for catalysis. Also known as OXA-type beta-lactamases due to their oxacillin-hydrolyzing activity.
