Overview

Serine incorporator 1 (SERINC1) is a multipass transmembrane protein encoded by the SERINC1 gene in humans, belonging to the serine incorporator (SERINC) family. It is predicted to enhance the incorporation of the polar amino acid serine into cell membranes, facilitating the synthesis of serine-derived lipids including phosphatidylserine and sphingolipids[3][5]. SERINC1 is mainly localized to the endoplasmic reticulum and plasma membrane[5]. It plays a role in membrane biogenesis and lipid metabolism, acting potentially as an adaptor or facilitator for serine transport rather than as a classical transporter. SERINC1 shows high conservation among eukaryotes, containing 10–11 transmembrane domains[3][4]. Unlike its family members SERINC3 and SERINC5, SERINC1 is not directly implicated in antiviral defense or as a host restriction factor against HIV[4]. Variants in the SERINC1 gene have been associated with some neurological disorders, including extratemporal epilepsy and autosomal recessive spastic paraplegia[5]. There are currently no drugs or targeted therapies known to specifically interact with SERINC1, nor is there a well-established role for SERINC1 as a biomarker or therapeutic target.
