Overview

Serine incorporator 4 (SERINC4) is a multi-pass transmembrane protein of the serine incorporator (SERINC) family, functioning primarily to incorporate the amino acid serine into membrane lipids, supporting biosynthesis of phosphatidylserine and sphingolipids[2][4][6]. SERINC4 participates in essential membrane biogenesis pathways and has a proposed role in the antiviral defense against retroviruses such as HIV, possibly operating as a restriction factor by modulating viral envelope protein conformation and inhibiting membrane fusion[2][7]. The gene displays differential expression across tissues and is implicated in certain cancers, congenital glycosylation disorders, and other conditions, though direct drug modulators are not currently described.

Mechanism of action

Notable for its antiviral activity, SERINC4 can inhibit viral entry and infectivity of HIV and other retroviruses, likely by interfering with membrane fusion and altering envelope glycoproteins. Its function does not appear to be directly modulated by small-molecule drugs at present.
