Serine palmitoyltransferase (SPT) is a key enzyme in sphingolipid metabolism, catalyzing the first and rate-limiting step in the de novo biosynthesis of sphingolipids. It condenses L-serine and palmitoyl-CoA to form 3-ketodihydrosphingosine, which is subsequently converted into various complex sphingolipids essential for cell membrane structure and function. Dysregulation or mutation of SPT subunits can lead to altered sphingolipid profiles associated with neurodegenerative diseases like Hereditary sensory neuropathy type I (HSAN-I).
