Serine palmitoyltransferase long chain base subunit 1 pseudogene 5 (SPTLC1P5) is a pseudogene—a segment of DNA that closely resembles the gene encoding the functional serine palmitoyltransferase long chain base subunit 1 (SPTLC1), but is non-functional and does not encode an active protein. Pseudogenes typically arise from duplication or retrotransposition events and lack either regulatory elements or protein-coding capacity, rendering them biologically inactive in terms of encoding functional proteins. There is no evidence suggesting SPTLC1P5 serves as a direct therapeutic target, is involved in disease processes, or interacts with drugs; its functional counterpart, SPTLC1, is a key enzyme in sphingolipid metabolism, but SPTLC1P5 itself has no established physiological or disease role.
