Serine protease 48 (PRSS48) is a predicted serine-type endopeptidase, encoded by the human PRSS48 gene, located on chromosome 4[1][4][5]. It belongs to the peptidase S1 family and is thought to function primarily in proteolytic cleavage processes within the extracellular region[1][2][3][6][7][12]. The exact biological function of PRSS48 remains largely uncharacterized, but gene ontology annotations suggest a role in general proteolysis. Orthologs exist in mouse and rat, indicating evolutionary conservation, and the gene has several isoforms[2][13]. There is a documented association with Coloboma of the optic nerve, but no well-established links to major human diseases or clinical applications at this time[1]. PRSS48 is not currently known to be the direct target of any approved drugs, nor does it have defined mechanisms of action for therapeutic agents or recognized biomarker applications. It is considered an enzyme rather than a receptor, ion channel, or transporter.
