Serine protease 53 (PRSS53)

Target
PRSS53
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Serine protease, Serine-type endopeptidase

Overview

Serine protease 53 (PRSS53) is a protein-coding gene that encodes an enzyme predicted to have serine-type endopeptidase activity, meaning it cleaves peptide bonds in proteins using a serine residue at its active site. In vitro, PRSS53 can degrade the fibrinogen alpha chain as well as pro-urokinase-type plasminogen activator, implicating a role in extracellular proteolysis. It is primarily predicted to be extracellular. This gene has been associated with certain diseases, including myxosarcoma and episodic kinesigenic dyskinesia 1. There is currently no evidence of direct interacting drugs or clinical use as a biomarker. PRSS53 is also referred to as Polyserase-3 due to its tandem serine-protease domains.
