Overview
Serine protease hepsin is a type II transmembrane serine protease primarily expressed on the cell surface. It plays key roles in physiological processes including metabolism regulation, protein processing, and auditory function. Elevated expression has been observed in several cancers, most notably prostate cancer, where it correlates with disease progression. Hepsin acts as a serine endopeptidase that cleaves various extracellular substrates, including prohepatocyte growth factor (pro-HGF) and urinary uromodulin/UMOD.
