SERTM2 refers to a gene locus encoding both a serine-rich, single-pass transmembrane micropeptide and a long non-coding RNA. The micropeptide is 89 amino acids long, enriched in motor neuron plasma membranes, and modulates neuronal excitability and resting membrane potential by interacting with the TASK1 potassium channel. In the heart, the SERTM2 locus (often referred to by aliases such as CARDEL or LINC00890) generates an lncRNA activated during human cardiac development; this RNA is required for proper cardiac cell specification and differentiation, and its knockout impairs heart formation. The gene is bifunctional: in some tissues (notably motor neurons), it is translated as a micropeptide, while in others (notably heart), its function appears to be mediated by the lncRNA alone.
