Overview

Neisseria meningitidis capsular polysaccharides are high-molecular-weight carbohydrate polymers that form the outer capsule of the bacterium. Serogroups A, C, Y, and W-135 are clinically significant and are targeted by vaccines. The capsule protects the bacterium from phagocytosis and complement-mediated killing, acting as a major virulence factor.
