Molecular classification
Neurotransmission, Cell Signaling
01

Overview

Serotonin (5-HT) release is a complex process involving exocytotic (vesicular) and nonexocytotic mechanisms. Exocytosis, triggered by calcium influx, releases serotonin into the synaptic cleft. Nonexocytotic release involves diffusion of cytosolic serotonin across the plasma membrane. Somatic/extrasynaptic release, under high-frequency stimulation, results in prolonged signaling from cell bodies and dendrites. The Serotonin Transporter (SERT) and autoreceptors tightly regulate extracellular serotonin concentrations. This multifaceted mechanism enables fine-tuned spatial-temporal control over serotonergic signaling.
