The serotonin 1D receptor (5-HT1D) is a G protein-coupled receptor that mediates inhibitory neurotransmission in the central nervous system. It is primarily known for its role in cranial vasoconstriction, making it a key target for migraine therapies. Activation of the 5-HT1D receptor inhibits adenylate cyclase activity, leading to decreased cAMP levels and reduced neuronal activity. Triptans, such as sumatriptan and zolmitriptan, are commonly used agonists at this receptor for the acute treatment of migraine.
