The serotonin 2B receptor (5-HT2B) is a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) that binds the neurotransmitter serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT). It plays a role in cardiac valve maintenance, vascular effects, and modulation of serotonin/dopamine uptake in the central nervous system. Overstimulation can lead to adverse effects such as valvulopathy.
Agonist binding leads to Gq/11 protein activation, stimulating phospholipase C, increasing IP3/DAG, and elevating intracellular Ca2+.
