Serotonin 4 Receptor (5HT4)

Target
5HT4
Molecular classification
G protein-coupled receptor, GPCR
01

Overview

The Serotonin 4 (5HT4) receptor is a G protein-coupled receptor that is activated by serotonin. It is primarily coupled to Gs proteins, leading to increased cAMP production. The receptor is expressed in the central nervous system (basal ganglia, cortex, hippocampus, amygdala) and peripheral tissues (gastrointestinal tract, bladder, heart). It plays a role in neurotransmitter modulation, gastrointestinal motility, mood regulation, and appetite control. Altered function or expression has been implicated in psychiatric disorders like depression and anxiety, as well as gastrointestinal disorders.
