Serotonin 5-HT2C Receptor (5-HT2C)

Target
5-HT2C
Molecular classification
G protein-coupled receptor, GPCR, 5-HT2 receptor subfamily
01

Overview

The Serotonin 5-HT2C receptor (5-HT2C) is a G protein-coupled receptor belonging to the 5-HT2 receptor subfamily. Primarily expressed in the central nervous system, it plays a crucial role in regulating mood, anxiety, appetite, and motor function. It couples to Gq/G11 proteins, activating PLC, and can also activate PLA2. Drugs targeting this receptor are being investigated for the treatment of obesity and psychiatric disorders, particularly as adjuncts to SSRIs.

Other names
5-Hydroxytryptamine Receptor 2CHTR2C

Mechanism of action

Gq/G11 protein activation leading to PLC activation, IP3 production, and increased intracellular calcium; PLA2 activation leading to RhoA/PLD pathway activation and ERK pathway stimulation.
