Serotonin 5-hydroxytryptamine 1A receptor (5-HT1A)

Target
5-HT1A
Molecular classification
G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR), Receptor
01

Overview

The 5-HT1A receptor is a G protein-coupled receptor primarily located in the central nervous system, particularly in the cortex, hippocampus, septum, amygdala, and raphe nuclei. It functions as both an autoreceptor on serotonergic neurons, inhibiting serotonin release, and as a postsynaptic receptor, mediating inhibitory neurotransmission. Activation of this receptor influences mood regulation, anxiety control, cognition, learning/memory processes, and induces the secretion of various hormones. Dysregulation of 5-HT1A receptor function is implicated in psychiatric conditions, including depression and anxiety disorders, making it a key target for antidepressant and anxiolytic medications.
