Overview

The serotonin 1A receptor, also known as the 5-HT1A receptor, is a subtype of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, or 5-HT) receptors. It is a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) that binds the neurotransmitter serotonin and plays a key role in regulating mood, anxiety, and several other physiological processes. Activation of the human HTR1A gene product regulates dopamine and serotonin levels within the brain—affecting neural activity, mood regulation, behavior modulation, anxiety response, aggression control, appetite regulation, cognition/learning/memory processes—and influences sleep/wake cycles among others. It also induces secretion of hormones such as cortisol, ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone), oxytocin (linked to prosocial/anxiolytic effects), prolactin, growth hormone & β‑endorphin.
