Serotonin 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 2C (5-HT2C)

Target
5-HT2C
Molecular classification
G protein-coupled receptor, GPCR, Receptor
01

Overview

The serotonin 5-HT2C receptor is a subtype of the serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) receptors, specifically within the 5-HT2 family. It is a GPCR that primarily couples to Gq/G11 proteins and mediates excitatory neurotransmission. The human gene encoding this receptor is HTR2C, located on the X chromosome. It plays significant roles in regulating mood, anxiety, feeding behavior, and reproductive behavior. Therapeutic interest includes drugs for obesity management, migraine treatment, psychiatric disorders, and substance use disorder therapies.
