Serotonin 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 5A (5-HT5A)

Target
5-HT5A
Molecular classification
G protein-coupled receptor, Receptor
01

Overview

Serotonin 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 5A is a G protein-coupled receptor and one of the subtypes within the serotonin receptor family. Its primary function involves mediating the effects of serotonin in the central nervous system, contributing to signal transduction and neuronal regulation. The gene for 5-HT5A is functionally expressed in the human brain, while the related 5-HT5B subtype is non-functional in humans due to gene disruption. Although less studied than other serotonin receptors, 5-HT5A may be involved in modulating mood and cognitive functions, and experimental evidence suggests potential relevance to neurological and psychiatric disease, but it is not a major clinical drug target at present.

Mechanism of action

Antagonism or agonism at the receptor to modulate serotonin neurotransmission. Modulation of G protein signaling pathways

03

Biological functions

Signal transductionNeurotransmissionregulation of neuronal activity
04

Disease associations

While direct involvement in defined disease states is less extensively documented than for other serotonin receptors, 5-HT5A may play a role in neurological and psychiatric disorders
05

Interacting drugs

Limited clinical drugs target 5-HT5A specifically. Some experimental compounds (e.g. LSD, which acts broadly on serotonin receptors) may interact with it, but no major approved drugs target 5-HT5A exclusively
