Serotonin Receptor 5-HT₂A (None)

Target
None
Molecular classification
G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR), Seven-transmembrane domain receptor, Receptor
01

Overview

The serotonin 2A receptor (5-HT₂A) is a subtype of the serotonin receptor family and a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR). It is the main excitatory GPCR for serotonin in the central nervous system, coupled to Gq/11 proteins and activating the PLC/IP3/DAG pathway. It is highly expressed in cortical regions and plays a critical role in cognition, mood regulation, and mediating the effects of hallucinogens. It's also implicated in neuropsychiatric disorders like depression and schizophrenia and targeted by antipsychotic drugs.
