The serotonin receptor 5-HT2 refers to a subfamily of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) receptors. These are G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) that bind the endogenous neurotransmitter serotonin. The main subtypes in this family are 5-HT2A, 5-HT2B, and 5-HT2C. They couple primarily to Gq/G11 proteins, leading to stimulation of phospholipase C (PLC), increased intracellular calcium levels, and activation of protein kinase C pathways. Involved in cognition, mood regulation, neurotransmission, vascular tone, and inflammation. Target for hallucinogens and many psychiatric drugs. Abnormal function is implicated in psychiatric disorders.
