Serotonin Receptor 5HT3 (5-HT3 Receptor)

Target
5-HT3 Receptor
Molecular classification
Ligand-gated ion channel, Receptor, Cys-loop receptor
01

Overview

The serotonin receptor 5HT3, or 5-HT3 receptor, is a ligand-gated ion channel belonging to the Cys-loop superfamily. Upon serotonin binding, the channel opens, allowing cations (Na+, K+, Ca2+) to flow, leading to neuronal depolarization. It is involved in emesis, GI motility, and neurodevelopment. Selective antagonists are used to prevent chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting.
