The 5-HT6 receptor is a subtype of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) receptors, which are G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) primarily found in the central nervous system. It is encoded by the HTR6 gene. The receptor modulates cognition, learning, memory, and influences multiple neurotransmitter systems. Its unique distribution pattern suggests it plays critical roles specifically related to higher-order brain functions.
Gs protein activation, increased adenylate cyclase activity, increased cAMP production. Antagonists increase glutamatergic and cholinergic neurotransmission, facilitate dopamine and norepinephrine release. Agonists enhance GABAergic signaling.
