Serotonin Receptor Subtype 1A (5-HT1A)

Target
5-HT1A
Molecular classification
G protein-coupled receptor, GPCR, Receptor
01

Overview

The serotonin receptor subtype 1A, commonly referred to as the 5-HT1A receptor, is a major inhibitory G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) that binds serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT), a key neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. Upon activation, it inhibits adenylyl cyclase, opens potassium channels, and inhibits calcium channels, leading to neuronal hyperpolarization and reduced excitability. It functions as both an autoreceptor on serotonergic neurons and as a heteroreceptor on other neurons. Dysfunction or altered activity of this receptor is implicated in psychiatric disorders such as depression and anxiety.
