Serotonin Receptor Subtype 5-HT2A (None)

Overview

The serotonin 2A receptor (5-HT2A) is a subtype of the serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) receptor family. It is a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR), specifically coupled to the Gq/11 protein, and is considered the main excitatory serotonin GPCR in the central nervous system. The gene encoding this receptor in humans is HTR2A. It is involved in learning and memory processes, mood regulation, neurogenesis, and cortical function and cognition. Abnormalities or dysregulation are implicated in psychiatric disorders including depression, schizophrenia, drug addiction, and suicidality. Overexpression has been observed in depressed patients; downregulation occurs with chronic SSRI or atypical antipsychotic use.
