Serotonin Transporter Protein SLC6A4 (SERT)

Target
SERT
Molecular classification
Transporter, Sodium:neurotransmitter symporter
01

Overview

The serotonin transporter, also known as SLC6A4, SERT, or 5-HTT, is an integral membrane protein responsible for the reuptake of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) from the synaptic cleft back into presynaptic neurons. This process terminates serotonergic signaling and recycles serotonin in a sodium-dependent manner. The transporter is essential for maintaining serotonin homeostasis in both the central nervous system and peripheral tissues.
