Serpin family B member 11 (SERPINB11)

Target
SERPINB11
Molecular classification
Serpin superfamily, Clade B (ovalbumin family), Non-inhibitory serpin
01

Overview

Serpin family B member 11 (SERPINB11) belongs to the broadly distributed serpin superfamily of proteins, which regulate proteolytic cascades relevant to processes such as inflammation, apoptosis, and development. Unlike other members, human SERPINB11 has evolved as a non-inhibitory serpin due to specific amino acid substitutions that disrupt the conformational fold needed for classic protease inhibition. While its canonical inhibitory activity is absent, SERPINB11 may have a role in adaptive responses to environmental pressures, especially host-pathogen interactions. Its expression and exact molecular function in human tissues remain incompletely characterized, though it is not currently regarded as a key mediator or therapeutic target in disease

02

Mechanism of action

Not applicable; SERPINB11’s lack of enzymatic inhibitory activity means it is not targeted by current drugs for a mechanism-based effect

03

Biological functions

Putatively involved in host-pathogen interaction and possibly in adaptive immunityLacks classic protease inhibitory activity in humansMay have evolved alternative non-inhibitory cellular functions
04

Disease associations

Some association with ovarian endometrial cancer and endometrioid ovary carcinoma from genomics databasesNo proven direct role in major diseases such as inflammation, neurodegeneration, or cardiovascular disease as seen with other serpins
