Serpin family B member 13 (SERPINB13) is a protein-coding gene and member of the serpin superfamily, notable for inhibiting serine and cysteine proteases such as cathepsin K and cathepsin L. In humans, it plays a role in keratinocyte proliferation and differentiation and is transcriptionally repressed by the transcription factor RUNX1. It is downregulated in several cancers, including squamous cell carcinoma and has been implicated in inflammatory skin disorders such as psoriasis. SERPINB13 regulates the Notch signaling pathway in pancreatic development, with studies suggesting therapeutic potential in diabetes by modulating β cell mass through immune targeting. It may act as a biomarker for cancer or diabetes progression via its expression or antibody response.
