Serum Albumin (Human)

Molecular classification
Protein, Transport protein, Plasma protein
01

Overview

Human serum albumin (HSA) is the most abundant protein in human blood plasma, constituting about half of the total serum protein. It is a highly water-soluble, globular, monomeric protein produced exclusively by the liver. HSA plays critical roles in maintaining oncotic pressure and pH balance in blood, as well as serving as a carrier for hormones, fatty acids, drugs, and other endogenous and exogenous compounds. Abnormal levels can indicate or contribute to disease states, and therapeutically purified HSA is used clinically for volume expansion or replacement therapy. HSA nanoparticles are also explored for targeted drug delivery.
