Overview

Serum alpha-amylase is an enzyme found predominantly in the blood, secreted mainly by the pancreas and salivary glands. It plays a crucial role in carbohydrate digestion by catalyzing the hydrolysis of α-1,4 glycosidic bonds in large polysaccharides such as starch and glycogen, breaking them down into smaller sugars like maltose and dextrins. It is primarily used in the diagnosis of acute pancreatitis, but serum lipase is now the preferred test due to improved sensitivity. Amylase is not considered a drug target.
