Overview

Sex comb on midleg homolog 1 pseudogene (ENSG00000255505) is a non-functional genomic DNA sequence related by sequence similarity to the protein-coding gene sex comb on midleg homolog 1 (SCMH1), a member of the Polycomb group of chromatin regulators. Pseudogenes arise via duplication or retrotransposition events, but acquire mutations such as frameshifts or stop codons that prevent them from encoding a functional protein. As a pseudogene, this locus does not produce a protein and has no established biological or disease function. The functional SCMH1 gene is broadly expressed and plays regulatory roles in chromatin structure and gene silencing; however, this pseudogene does not contribute to those functions[11][5][1].
