SOX2 is a critical transcription factor essential for maintaining the pluripotency and self-renewal of undifferentiated embryonic stem cells. It forms complexes with other key pluripotency factors such as Oct4 and Nanog to regulate gene expression networks that keep stem cells in an undifferentiated state. In addition to its role in pluripotency maintenance, SOX2 is vital for neural development. Mutations or dysregulation are linked to several developmental disorders, including SOX2 anophthalmia syndrome. SOX2 also has roles implicated in cancer biology, such as regulating progression of certain cancers.
Binds specific DNA regions to regulate target gene activity. Cooperates with Oct4 at non-palindromic DNA sequences. Regulates its own expression and that of other core factors like Oct4.
