Sex drive

01

Overview

"Sex drive" (libido) is a multifactorial behavioral and physiological construct that reflects an individual's motivation or desire to initiate sexual activity[1][3]. It is not a single protein, receptor, or gene product, but rather the emergent output of interactions among neurotransmitters (e.g., dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, norepinephrine), steroid sex hormones (e.g., testosterone, estrogen, progesterone), neuropeptides, and multiple brain areas including the hypothalamus, limbic system, and relevant cortical regions[1][3][5]. The mesolimbic dopamine pathway is particularly important in promoting sexual motivation, while androgens like testosterone exert powerful modulatory effects[1][3][5]. Disruption in the complex neurobiological circuitry underlying sex drive can be associated with a wide range of diseases or conditions, but "sex drive" itself is not a molecule, receptor, or direct drug target. In summary, "sex drive" is not itself a molecular or therapeutic target, but a global behavior influenced by the coordinated activity of many molecular and neural systems.
