Overview

Sex hormone production refers to the biosynthetic and regulatory pathways by which sex hormones are synthesized, mainly in the gonads (ovaries and testes), adrenal glands, and in some peripheral tissues such as fat and liver[6][1][8]. This process involves a cascade of enzymes (such as steroidogenic acute regulatory protein, cytochrome P450 enzymes, 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, and aromatase), transporters, and both nuclear and membrane-associated receptors[1][2][3]. Sex hormone levels are regulated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis through pulsatile secretion of gonadotropin-releasing hormone, luteinizing hormone, and follicle-stimulating hormone[1][4][5]. Sex hormone production as a biological process is not considered a druggable biological target in and of itself; instead, individual enzymes or receptors within this pathway (such as aromatase, estrogen receptor, androgen receptor, etc.) are the canonical therapeutic targets in clinical medicine[1][2][6].
