Sexual-stage Surface Protein Pfs25 (Pfs25)

Target
Pfs25
Molecular classification
Surface Protein
01

Overview

Sexual-stage surface protein Pfs25 from *Plasmodium falciparum* is an essential molecule expressed after fertilization during sexual reproduction inside mosquitoes. Its unique structure makes it both challenging as a vaccine target but also highly effective: antibodies targeting conformational epitopes on native/recombinant Pfs25 can prevent further parasite development within mosquitoes—thus blocking human-to-mosquito malaria transmission entirely. This has made it one of the most intensively studied targets for next-generation TBVs aiming at global malaria elimination efforts.
