Overview

SGMS1 antisense RNA 1 (SGMS1-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA gene transcribed antisense to the SGMS1 gene locus. It is predicted to act upstream of or within the positive regulation of myelination and control of gene expression[5]. Recent research implicates SGMS1-AS1 in cancer biology, including a role in the regulation of metabolic pathways in colon cancer through ceRNA mechanisms involving microRNA and CPT2, suggesting it may participate in tumor metabolism or progression as part of a regulatory axis[6]. Its functional characterization and disease relevance are areas of ongoing study. Note: SGMS1-AS1 should not be confused with SGMS1, which encodes the enzyme sphingomyelin synthase 1, a bona fide protein and therapeutic target in cancer and metabolic diseases[1][2][3]. Current evidence does not support classifying the antisense RNA SGMS1-AS1 itself as a direct drug target.
