Overview

SGO1 antisense RNA 1 (SGO1-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA), transcribed from the antisense strand partially overlapping the SGO1 (Shugoshin-like protein 1) gene. It does not encode a protein and is primarily localized in the cytoplasm. SGO1-AS1 is downregulated in several cancers, including gastric carcinoma and breast cancer, and acts as a tumor suppressor lncRNA. Mechanistically, it binds to the RNA-binding protein PTBP1, facilitating decay of TGFB1/2 mRNA, thereby reducing TGFβ signaling, which limits epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), invasion, and metastasis. Its expression inversely correlates with cancer progression and metastasis, making it a candidate biomarker for prognosis in certain malignancies[1][2][5]. There are no known pharmacological agents directly targeting SGO1-AS1, nor established therapeutics that act through modulation of this lncRNA[1][2].
