Overview

SBK2 encodes an evolutionarily conserved putative serine/threonine protein kinase with muscle-specific, highly atrium-enriched expression, particularly localized around the A-band of cardiac sarcomeres[7]. It is predicted to function in the MAP kinase cascade and may have roles in signal transduction, cell differentiation, and sarcomere organization[1][5][7]. Knockdown studies in cardiac myocytes suggest that SBK2 is critical for sarcomere integrity and muscle differentiation, indicating importance in heart development and possibly disease[7]. Although annotated in major gene/protein databases, its biological roles are still being clarified and it is not currently a direct therapeutic target of any approved drugs[1][5][7].
