Shenque acupoint (CV8 (also Ren-8))

Target
CV8 (also Ren-8)
01

Overview

The Shenque acupoint (CV8) is a major acupuncture point located in the center of the umbilicus (navel). Traditionally, it is considered a vital point for harmonizing qi and blood and supporting yang energy in the body. It plays a central role in TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), being linked to multiple meridians and internal organs. Modern research shows it is richly vascularized and innervated, with a substantial presence of adipose tissue-resident somatic stem cells, suggesting possible biological underpinnings for its therapeutic applications. Clinical applications include moxibustion, topical herbal therapies, and rarely acupuncture (needling contraindicated), targeting chronic conditions like heart failure, gastrointestinal and gynecological complaints, and states of extreme weakness.

Mechanism of action

Warm and rescue yang energy (TCM theory); Improve qi and blood circulation (TCM); Facilitate subcutaneous absorption of externally applied drugs at the acupoint due to unique vascularization; May have effects via abundant somatic stem cells and their differentiation abilities in local adipose tissue.

03

Biological functions

Regulation of qi and blood circulation (in TCM terms)Influencing meridians (Ren, Chong, Du, Dai, and the twelve primary meridians)Supporting yang energy, harmonizing viscera (TCM perspective)Shown experimentally to contain abundant somatic stem cells in surrounding adipose tissue
04

Disease associations

Chronic heart failure (improvement of symptoms with moxibustion)Abdominal pain, diarrhea, borborygmus, prolapse of rectum, incessant diarrhea (traditional indications)Other roles described in TCM for conditions of yang collapse, deficiency, digestive and gynecological complaints
05

Safety considerations

Needling the navicular area (Shenque) is contraindicated; only moxibustion or topical applications are performed due to risk of injuryFew reported adverse effects; considered safe with proper technique
06

Biomarkers

None establishedExperimental studies have explored stem cell antigen-1 (Sca-1) in local tissue
