Overview

Shiga toxin is a potent cytotoxin produced by certain bacteria, most notably *Shigella dysenteriae* and Shiga toxin-producing *Escherichia coli* (STEC). It is responsible for severe gastrointestinal disease in humans, including bloody diarrhea and hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a potentially fatal complication involving kidney failure. The toxin is an AB5-type exotoxin that binds to Gb3 glycolipids on host cells and inhibits protein synthesis, leading to cell death.
