Target intelligence / Profile preview

Shiga toxin type 1 B subunit (Stx1B)

Target
Stx1B
Molecular classification
Toxin subunit, Glycolipid-binding protein
01

Overview

The Shiga toxin type 1 B subunit is a component of the Shiga toxin, a potent bacterial exotoxin. The B subunit forms a pentamer that binds specifically to globotriaosylceramide (Gb3), also known as CD77, which is present on the surface of target cells. This binding facilitates endocytosis and intracellular trafficking of the Shiga toxin A subunit, leading to inhibition of protein synthesis and cell death. While not directly toxic, StxB is essential for delivering the toxic A subunit into the cell.
