The Shiga toxin type 2 (Stx2) A subunit is the enzymatically active component of the Stx2 toxin, produced by certain strains of Escherichia coli and Shigella dysenteriae. It functions as an N-glycosidase, irreversibly inhibiting protein synthesis in eukaryotic cells by modifying 28S rRNA. Stx2A is a key virulence factor associated with severe diseases such as hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).
