Shigella is a genus of Gram-negative bacteria that causes shigellosis, a diarrheal illness. The four main species are Shigella dysenteriae, Shigella flexneri, Shigella boydii, and Shigella sonnei. These bacteria invade intestinal cells and produce toxins, leading to inflammation and diarrhea. Transmission occurs via the fecal-oral route. Antibiotic resistance is a growing concern.
