Shigella flexneri 1b O-antigen

Molecular classification
Polysaccharide, Lipopolysaccharide component, O-antigen
01

Overview

The O-antigen of Shigella flexneri 1b is a key component of the bacterium’s lipopolysaccharide (LPS), serving as the primary determinant for serotyping. It consists of repeating tetrasaccharide units: [L-Rhamnose I – L-Rhamnose II – L-Rhamnose III – N-Acetylglucosamine], modified by specific patterns of glucosylation, O-acetylation, and phosphoethanolamine addition. These modifications are genetically controlled by chromosomal and phage/plasmid-borne genes. The O-antigen contributes to immune evasion and is a target for vaccine development.
