Shigella flexneri serotype 2a is a Gram-negative, non-motile, rod-shaped bacterium in the genus Shigella. It is a major cause of shigellosis (bacillary dysentery) and is characterized by its invasive ability and diverse virulence factors[3][7][9]. The serotype "2a" refers to antigenic features of its O-antigen (part of lipopolysaccharide), which play a role in immune evasion and pathogenesis[1]. Drug resistance is increasingly common, and various molecular components of the organism (such as essential metabolic enzymes and outer membrane proteins) are targets for the development of new therapies and vaccines[2][4][6][8]. Efforts to control shigellosis focus on vaccines (targeting O-antigen or other bacterial proteins), as well as novel antimicrobial compounds that inhibit vital bacterial functions[8].
