Shigella minor Antigen

Molecular classification
Protein, Polysaccharide, Antigen
01

Overview

Shigella minor antigen refers to surface molecules of the bacterium *Shigella* that are recognized by the immune system but are less dominant or less immunogenic compared to the O-antigen of lipopolysaccharide (LPS). These antigens may include surface-exposed proteins or polysaccharides that elicit weaker or more restricted immune responses. They can be involved in bacterial adhesion, immune evasion, or modulation of host cell signaling pathways. They may serve as targets for diagnostic antibodies or contribute to partial immunity following infection. While most vaccine development focuses on the major O-antigen, minor antigens might be included in whole-cell vaccines or considered for broadening protection across multiple serotypes if they show cross-reactivity.
