Overview
The O-antigen polysaccharide of *Shigella sonnei* is a unique surface carbohydrate that forms part of the bacterium’s lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and also exists as a high-molecular-weight capsule. It is composed of repeating units of 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-L-altruronic acid (L-AltNAcA) and 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-L-fucose (FucNAc4N). The O-antigen is plasmid-borne and modulates bacterial virulence by providing resistance against complement-mediated killing, evading host immune responses, and influencing invasion/inflammation balance.
