Shigella sonnei O-specific Polysaccharide (None)

Target
None
Molecular classification
Polysaccharide, Lipopolysaccharide component, O-antigen
01

Overview

The Shigella sonnei O-specific polysaccharide (O-SP) is the outermost domain of the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) molecule found on the surface of S. sonnei. It plays a dual role as both an essential virulence factor and a protective antigen. The O-SP consists of repeating oligosaccharide units of 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-L-altruronic acid (L-AltNAcA) and 2-acetamido-4-amino-2,4-dideoxy-D-fucose (FucNAc4N). It is a primary target for immune responses and vaccine development against shigellosis. Conjugation of the O-SP to carrier proteins enhances immunogenicity.
