Shikimate dehydrogenase (SDH)

Target
SDH
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Oxidoreductase
01

Overview

Shikimate dehydrogenase (SDH) is an NAD(P)H-dependent oxidoreductase enzyme that catalyzes the reversible reduction of 3-dehydroshikimate to shikimate, using NADPH as a cofactor. This reaction constitutes the fourth step in the shikimate pathway, which is essential for the biosynthesis of aromatic amino acids—phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan—in plants, bacteria, fungi, algae, and some parasites. Animals and humans lack this pathway, making SDH an attractive target for herbicides and antimicrobial agents.
